As much as it saddens me that pseudoscience would pop up at John Hopkins, it warms the cockles of my heart to see it so enthusiastically debunked.

I'm not sure why this new rule is being couched as a pro-choice vs. pro-life women's issue. With the new expansion to include all medical procedures it clearly effects men and children as well. Hospitals can now theoretically hire doctors who don't believe that antibiotics are ethical, who think that certain surgeries are morally questionable. What if a medical provider believed that a certain patient deserved what they were getting and thus should suffer from their illness. Maybe an overweight patient shouldn't receive diabetes medication because it is unethical to condone their unhealthy lifestyle choices. There are all sorts of creepy directions this rule could go. We shouldn't stand by while the sacred trust of the medical profession is corrupted. The knowledge doctors possess gives them great power over not just the health, but also the well-being of patients. That power should come with responsibilities including a duty to provide objectively high quality services to patients regardless of one's own personal biases. We need standards in medicine. Not more problematic subjectivity.

I remember when I was a kid touring a historical school house and seeing the paddle and thinking how barbaric schools were in the 1800s. With all we've learned about educational theory and child psychology, I cannot believe that beatings are still occurring in public schools. This needs to stop and it needs to stop now!

I'm pretty darn liberal myself, but on this issue I think these conservative women are making some sense. If we want to take seriously the rights of health care workers to not provide certain treatments we have to take equally seriously the rights of patients to have alternate access to those same treatments.

If you have conceived a child your obligation doesn't end when the relationship with the other parent fizzles. Ensure your child is provided for by not evading child support payments.

I was particularly struck by the true assertion that exposure to the philosophical tools that allow us to deconstruct isms usually occurs in universities thus connecting it to another ism, classism. The world, and the United States especially is a relentlessly ironic place to be.

Girls and boys are pretty much equally matched in math. It's time to start teaching them that way.
